At a UN-sponsored forum in Uzbekistan on December 5-6, AUWCL Professor Diego Rodríguez-Pinzón discussed AUWCL’s contributions to the advancement of human rights education as an example of the implementation of the 2011 UN Declaration on Education and Training in the Field of Human Rights.

This year, the Academy on Human Rights and Humanitarian Law’s 2021 summer programs and initiatives hoped to enhance and increase communication in the human rights community.

It is with heavy hearts that the Academy on Human Rights and Humanitarian Law joins the human rights community in mourning the passing of our Colleague and Professor, but most of all, dear friend, Professor Christof Heyns. Christof was a part of the Academy’s advisory board for over 15 years and a respected and loved professor at our summer program.

On International Women’s Day, the Academy on Human Rights and Humanitarian Law would like to highlight the work of the Academy’s leadership team, remarkable faculty, and accomplished students. There is no doubt that their commitment to continue to promote and advocate for Human Rights will have a global impact.

Law and the Office of the Special Envoy of the United Nations Secretary-General on Disability and Accessibility hosted a webinar on "Protecting and Empowering Persons with Disabilities in the African Region in the Context of the COVID-19 Pandemic". The purpose of this webinar was to identify, in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, barriers, and challenges in addressing the acute and longer-term needs and human rights of persons with disabilities in line with the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD).

OAS and American University Washington College of Law to Offer Scholarships for the LL.M. in International Human Rights and Humanitarian Law offered in both English and Spanish (Maestria en Derechos Humanos y Derecho Internacional Humanitario). American University Washington College of Law will award each Scholarship Recipient a tuition waiver in the amount of fifty percent (50%) 

 On October 5 and 6, various organizations sponsored a panel on Constitutional Reform in Chile. This series sponsored by the Academy on Human Rights and Humanitarian Law of the American University, Washington College of Law, the Center for Strategic & International Studies (CSIS), the Inter-American Dialogue, the National Democratic Institute (NDI), the International Republican Institute (IRI), and the National Endowment for Democracy (NED), aimed to collaborate, understand, analyze and enrich the discussion on the process of constitutional reform in Chile, carried out among experts from both Chile and the international community.

The Academy on Human Rights and Humanitarian Law is proud to celebrate 25 years of the Inter-American Human Rights Moot Court Competition. The Competition is a unique trilingual (English, Spanish and Portuguese) event designed to enlighten and instruct students and legal practitioners on how to utilize the Inter-American system to tackle human rights abuses. From its inception in 1996 to date, the Competition has evolved to become a global forum for scholarly engagement on frontline human rights issues in the Americas and beyond.
