New’s Visit to Genea - CEDAW
We are honored to share that, on February 22nd, Professor Claudia Martin, co-Director of the Academy, participated in the General Discussion organized by the 84th CEDAW Committee Session regarding its future General Recommendation. As a member of GQual’s Secretariat, Professor Martin was part of the group of experts that asked the Committee to address women’s underrepresentation in international decision-making organizations and to define the scope of article 8th of the Convention on the Elimination of all forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW), as to understand that the standard of the composition should be 50:50. You can read GQual’s statement here: https://gqualcampaign.org/wp-content/uploads/2023/02/2023-01-16-GQUAL-Oral-Statement-CEDAW.pdf
Additionally, on February 23rd, Professor Martin was part of the conversation on Equal and Inclusive Representation of Women in Decision-Making Systems, a relevant discussion on the importance of women’s influence for the legitimacy and effectiveness of international bodies. This significant dialogue was co-sponsored by GQual (@GqualCampaing), the Geneva Academy Of International Humanitarian Law and Human Rights (@Geneva_Academy), and the World Trade Institute (@WTIunibe) of the Universität Bern (@unibern).
On the same day, the Co-Director of the Academy shared her experience regarding women’s careers in International Law during a panel discussion co-hosted by the Geneva Academy (@Geneva_Academy), Atlas Women (@Atlas_Women), and GQual (@GqualCampaing). Through her participation, she inspired women to “stick to your dreams and keep believing you can change the world”.
