It is with heavy hearts that the Academy on Human Rights and Humanitarian Law joins the human rights community in mourning the passing of our Colleague and Professor, but most of all, dear friend, Professor Christof Heyns. Christof was a part of the Academy’s advisory board for over 15 years and a respected and loved professor at our summer program. His commitment to the training of human rights defenders, professionals, and law students, was immeasurable, and this was seen in his dedication to educating students about the African regional human rights system and the UN system. Students delighted in his teaching and appreciated the unique way in which he presented very complex issues while fostering an inclusive environment for discussion.
Christof was a visionary and an innate collaborator that included us in a number of collaborative projects, such as the co-sponsoring of the Nelson Mandela World Human Rights Moot Court Competition. In each of the positions he occupied, he made significant, original, and long-lasting contributions that will stay with us forever.
