Description
This course will lead you on an examination of the ethical obligations and rules that govern lawyers in practice, including a detailed analysis of the Model Rules of Professional Conduct. We will explore ethics in context, looking at both established and emerging ethical concerns. To enrich this exploration, we will use the lens of public interest practice in a variety of lawyering contexts including direct representation, impact litigation, criminal public defense, government lawyering, policy and legislative work, transactional practice, and pro bono representation. Attendance and class participation are expected. Grading will be based on class participation, written assignment(s), and in-class quizzes. There will not be a final exam.

Schrag, Ethical Problems in the Practice of Law, Concise Third Education for Two-Credit Courses (“L&S”) You will also need to have access to the ABA Model Rules of Professional Conduct, 2016. The Rules and Comments are available online at no cost from http://www.americanbar.org/groups/professional_responsibility/publications/model_rules_of_professional_conduct/model_rules_of_professional_conduct_table_of_contents.html. If you choose to purchase a hard copy of the ABA Model Rules, you may go directly to the ABA’s website or find another source. However, if purchasing a hard-copy, make sure that it is the most recent edition.
