Description

This course will provide an overview of the theory, negotiation and operation of various regional trade agreements (RTAs). In particular, the course will explore the role and impact of regional trade agreements on industries and communities across the globe, and will assess the legal and political mechanisms involved in implementing RTAs. Topics discussed will include market access for goods and services, dispute settlement, investment, labor, the environment and other emerging issues addressed in regional trade agreements. This course offers the unique opportunity for students to engage in practical exercises that simulate trade agreement negotiations. Students work in teams to learn issues involved in real life trade negotiations with guidance from professors. This course encourages debate and learning through practical exercises. This course requires active participation from students, including class presentations and an active negotiations exercise in the end of the semester.
