Description

This fourteen-week course will examine the legal and moral issues raised by genetic research and technology. We will look first at the history of the scientific and technological developments, including eugenics, and the use of genetic information through the mapping of the human genome. Next, the class will survey federal and state regulation of genetic research investigation, including stem cell research, and the application of genetic technology to life events including reproduction, birth, illness, crime, disability and employment. The legal obligations of health care professionals and others to provide reasonable genetic services and protect genetic information will be identified in each area as well as the legal remedies available to enforce these obligations.
