Description

This course addresses the ethical requirements governing lawyers – which, as we will learn on day one, is by no means limited to their representation of clients or to the practice of law. Our focus is primarily on the ABA Model Rules of Professional Conduct and secondarily on the D.C. Rules of Professional Conduct; unless stated otherwise, all problems and hypotheticals are to be analyzed under both sets of rules. As we will discuss in some detail, you will be governed as an attorney by the Rules adopted by each tribunal that admits you to practice. My goal is for you to leave this course with: (i) a well-rounded understanding of the law that will apply to your own actions in your future legal careers; (ii) a well-honed sense of where the ethical dangers and pitfalls lie; and (iii) the tools necessary to keep you out of the evil grasp of the big, bad Bar Counsel.
