Assessment: Closed book exam, multiple choice with access to Federal Rules of Evidence provided by professor. Class participation. 12-14 multiple choice and short answer review exercises (10-25 questions each).
Description
In this class you will learn the federal rules of evidence and understand how to apply the evidence rules in practice. The required reading for this class includes very few cases. Instead, you will learn the rules of evidence by applying the rules to a series of problems assigned throughout the semester. You are expected to read the text of the evidence rules, read the explanation of the rules in the textbook, and come to class prepared to apply the rule to the assigned problems. The class will be taught using a combination of lecture, demonstrations, multi-media presentations (“video hypos”), and small group exercises. You are required to participate during class, and you can expect to be randomly called on to answer questions and discuss assigned evidence problems. Throughout the semester there will be approximately 14 sets of problems assigned in order for you to review the evidence rules and practice the application of the rules. Your final grade will be based on your timely completion of the review exercises and your performance on the final exam. The final exam will be a closed book, objective test.

The required materials for this course are: (1) Park, Leonard, et al., Evidence Law: A Student’s Guide to the Law Of Evidence as Applied in American Trials (“Textbook”); (2) the Federal Rules of Evidence (“FRE”), available at "http://federalevidence.com/downloads/rules.of.evidence.pdf" and on MyWCL. You must have a copy of the FRE with you in each class; and (3) supplemental materials posted on MyWCL. I have arranged to have copies of the textbook placed on reserve in the WCL library during the semester.
