This course provides an overview of the different institutions and markets that comprise the financial system, with a particular focus on banks (and the shadow banking services that emulate them) and the securities markets. The financial system is vital to the operation of the broader economy, but has the potential to generate negative outcomes for individual consumers and investors, as well as for the economy at large. This course will therefore provide an overview of the regulatory approaches that have been adopted in an attempt to eliminate, or at least mitigate, negative outcomes. In particular, it will explore the ongoing and extensive reform of financial regulatory approaches in response to the financial crisis of 2007-2008.
