Advanced Legal Research and Writing is an asynchronous online class focusing on research skills essential to practice, clerking, research assignments, law review comments, and seminar and upper level papers. The course uses a range of digital legal research tools and some print resources. Students will complete online quizzes related to the readings, discussion board threads, practical legal research assignments, and evaluations of various research resources. The course reviews primary and secondary sources, legislative history research, administrative law research, practice materials, and specialized topical resources. Students also receive advanced training on Bloomberg Law, LexisAdvance, WestlawNext, Fastcase, and ProQuest. Students should be able to evaluate and use alternative research resources and develop research strategies and efficient online research skills. The entire course is online and asynchronous, but course assignments and activities are categorized as “in-class” or “out-of-class.” “In-class” activities are ones you would typically encounter in a traditional classroom setting: lectures, guest lectures/demonstrations, and group discussions. “Out of class” activities mirror traditional homework assignments: readings, quizzes, and written assignments.
