Description
This course explores contemporary understandings of human rights and sustainable development, and the respective roles of governments, international institutions and the private sector. We will consider points of convergence and tension - and trace the emergence and implementation of human rights standards and principles in global supply chains, international development assistance and financing. We will closely look at the roles of the UN, international financial institutions, the industrialized countries and fragile states. Upon completion of this course, students will be familiar with key business and human rights frameworks, the tools used by governments, international institutions and corporations to identify and address human rights impacts, and how to apply these concepts to emerging challenges, including climate change and conflict.
