The Colours of Food Security -- A Human Rights Photo Series

 Join the Center for Human Rights & Humanitarian Law's Student Advisory Board for "The Colours of Food Security", a human rights photo series.  This exhibit explores the social, environmental, and human rights issues the food system faces, and illustrates the broad range of policy solutions needed to change the way agriculture operates on a global scale.  The photo series will be displayed from 4:30pm - 6:30pm on April 9 in the Founder's Hall Lobby. 

Pathways to Employment in International Law

International and Comparative Studies and the American Bar Association Section of International Law will host a diverse group of attorneys currently engaged in practicing international law, advising clients on legal issues involving international matters, doing research, and advising governments. The speakers will share their experiences and advise JD and LLM students on how to pursue an interesting and successful career in international practice.

Rich and Poor: Opportunities and Challenges in an Age of Disruption

American University and the World Bank Group invite you to attend an event with Dr. Jim Yong Kim, President of the World Bank Group, where he will speak about efforts to solve the most pressing global challenges. Dr. Kim will address how innovation and technology are helping redefine the relationship between rich and poor countries in an era of rapid and transformational change. The event will be moderated by Joshua Johnson, host of the NPR show 1A.

The event will be followed by a reception, where AU students will have the chance to meet World Bank Group President Jim Yong Kim and AU alumni now working at the World Bank Group. Light refreshments and hors d'oeuvres will be served.

Artist Kamran Khavarani Donates Paintings to Student Bar Association

WASHINGTON, March 22, 2018 – The artist Kamran Khavarani, who is internationally recognized as the creator of a new style of painting, Abstract Romanticism, is donating two paintings to the Student Bar Association of American University Washington College of Law.

The paintings are set to be installed in Capital Hall on April 11, 2018. At the ceremony, Dr. Khavarani will give a talk on his work entitled, “What is Art, What is ‘Personart’: Art for a New Consciousness, Art for a New Humanity.” In addition, Professor Simin Mozayeni, from State University of New York, New Paltz, will present her research, “Three Empirical Studies of Khavarani’s Paintings, An Application in Healthcare.”

“We are looking forward to adding Dr. Khavarani’s artwork to our student space,” said Associate Dean of Student Affairs David Jaffe. “We anticipate that students will utilize them in adding to their resources of wellness and wellbeing as they work their way through the rigor of law school.”

Dr. Khavarani has a master’s degree in Architecture and a Ph.D. in Urban Design and City Planning. He is also the conceptual designer of the international competition for the City Theater of Tehran that is a landmark jewel in the capital city of Iran.  He received the Highest Award of Excellence in Design from the State of California and Beverly Hills design award.

One of his paintings, The Bird of Freedom, has been recognized by an official resolution from the United States Congress and is permanently displayed in the Library of Congress.  Dr. Khavarani is also a recipient of the Ellis Island Medal of Honor in 2010. In 2011, 2013 and 2017, he was the featured artist on the PBS series "Between the Lines," the three-time Emmy-awarded show.

Comparative and International Rule of Law Development: Lessons Learned From the ABA ROLI

Since 1990, the American Bar Association has supported legal reform and legal capacity building throughout the world, drawing on international and comparative best practices to support rule of law development. This presentation from the Director of the ABA Rule of Law Initiative will highlight lessons learned from this work and provide an opportunity to discuss how comparative law works in practice in the rule of law development field.
