April 28, 2020

Due to the COVID-19 emergency and to safeguard the health and well-being of our communities, American University Washington College of Law will offer its world-renowned specialized summer programs online. Participants will attend live online classes, including small group breakout rooms and live chats, gain real-time access to expert faculty, and complete self-paced, engaging coursework accessible 24/7 on our convenient online platform.

For over 20 years, AUWCL has been training upper-level students and practitioners in emerging legal fields with courses offered by our nationally ranked programs and internationally recognized institutes. This year, programs have developed original, timely online course content that will allow participants a deep dive into different areas of the law.

Campaign 2020 and the Law |  june 19-27

This dynamic, new summer program is designed to guide participants through this important election year. Campaign laws and the courts will play a critical role in determining how our democracy functions in the most basic, vital function of our system – voting. Yet as basic as voting is, the system of election laws is a complex web of state and federal regulation subject to a wide range of political strategies, regulatory policies, and judicial interpretations. This is the year where legal skills related to campaigning and elections will be more relevant and important than ever before.

Professor Stephen Wermiel said, “This is a unique chance to study the cutting edge issues in election law as it is unfolding right now and from experts who are and have long been on the front lines of these topics.”

Anti-Corruption Law (U.S. and International) | June 1-5 and june 8-12

Corruption was a major global issue prior to the pandemic, but today it is more salient than ever with trillions of dollars flowing globally to purchase critical and reliable supplies to assist those in need as well as an unprecedented crackdown on government and citizen oversight. Participants will gain a deeper understanding of the legal, regulatory and institutional anti-corruption protections and vulnerabilities. Leading experts, including present and former U.S. and foreign government prosecutors, investigators for international organizations, and law firm and corporate counsel, bring their experience into the classroom.

“Corruption’s pernicious impact on government accountability, business integrity, effective economic development, and national security has led to a burgeoning global demand from the public, private, and non-profit sectors for skilled practitioners,” says Program Director Nancy Boswell. “This program provides a unique learning experience for government officials and private practitioners seeking to enhance their expertise, and for students focusing their studies on anti-corruption and related fields.”

Health Law and Policy + ZOOM and Learn Series | zoom sessions: may 29, June 19, july 8

In addition to the yearly Health Law and Policy Summer Institute, the program will host three ZOOM and Learn Series. Summer Institute Director Asha Scielzo believes these will be great educational and networking opportunities, allowing the programs to reach a national audience of law students and practitioners.

“While the events are centered around health law topics covered in the Institute, we've crafted them to have broad appeal,” said Scielzo. The first event relates to fraud and abuse in the health care industry, and will include a discussion of current issues arising due to COVID-19. The second event will delve into drug pricing and regulation, another timely hot topic with broad interest. The final event will explore artificial intelligence applications for health care and the intersection of science and law. All ZOOM and Learn Series are free with registration, and are co-sponsored with the American Health Law Association; the third event is additionally co-sponsored by the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
