Accountability, Transitional Justice, and the Case of Northern Ireland
||Thursday, September 12, 2013
||12:00PM - 01:15PM
||In 1998, the British and Irish governments, along with the major political parties of Northern Ireland, reached the historic Good Friday Agreement to bring peace to the troubled region. While there have been determined efforts by those on both sides of the conflict to solidify reconciliation, the essential need to assure transitional justice and achieve accountability for past human rights abuses has proven elusive so far. Join us as we discuss the challenges for accountability in transitional post-conflict contexts, looking specifically at the case of Northern Ireland.
Participants will include:
WCL Prof. Diane Orentlicher, former United Nations Independent Expert on Combating Impunity
Peter Kissel, Esq., Human Rights Chair of the Irish American Unity Conference
Niall Murphy, partner with the Belfast solicitors Kevin R. Winters & Co.
