Recent months have seen growing debate about the conduct and recusal practices of Supreme Court Justices. Scholars and advocacy groups have urged that Supreme Court Justices should be subject to the Code of Conduct that governs all other federal judges and should not be the sole decisionmakers regarding their own recusal decisions. Republican Members of Congress have demanded that Justice Kagan recuse herself from the Affordable Care Act litigation, while Democrats have demanded the same of Justice Thomas and have introduced legislation. The Chief Justice devoted his year-end report on the state of the judiciary to responding to the debate.
The Alliance for Justice has produced a short film – “A Question of Integrity: Politics, Ethics and the Supreme Court” -- that explores these issues. The film will be introduced by Nan Aron, Director of the Alliance for Justice, before it is shown. The showing will be followed by a panel discussion that will be led by Professor William Yeomans, American University Washington College of Law and will include experts in the area.
