This event seeks to explore the various roles that Islam plays in modern nation-states around the world. The conference will focus on the idea of Islamic law and how it manifests in Muslim-identity countries, while also looking at the normative power of Islam by analyzing more informal formulations, such as tribal or community justice mechanisms. The conference will close by looking to prospective transformative roles for Islam in modern states.
