2002 Founders' Celebration Events
The Third Annual Peter M. Cicchino Awards Event:
Lawyering at the Margins
April 18, 2002
This annual event was held in honor of a beloved former WCL Professor, Peter M. Cicchino, who passed away in 2000. Prof. Cicchino was a brilliant scholar, teacher, and a brave and creative public interest lawyer, who, among many other accomplishments, founded the Lesbian and Gay Youth Project at the Urban Justice Center in New York City. The theme for this year's panel discussion, "Lawyering at the Margins," is drawn from Prof. Cicchinos record of advocacy for clients and causes "at the margins," either because they are poor, powerless, or otherwise dispossessed, or because they are unpopular by virtue of their identities, origins, or other social characteristics. A panel of distinguished speakers offered thoughts about the motivations and commitments that inspire "lawyering at the margins" in the spirit of Peter M. Cicchino.
