Professor Juan Mendez has been appointed as a member of the Advisory Board for the United Nations Global Study on Children Deprived of Liberty. The study has been commissioned to the Secretary General by the UN General Assembly with Professor Manfred Nowak, of the University of Vienna to lead the research and survey effort.

The Board includes the following experts representing different regions: Ann Skelton (South Africa), Asma Jahangir (Pakistan), Catalina Devandas (Costa Rica), Dainius Puras (Lithuania), Hina Jilani (Pakistan), Jean Zermatten (Switzerland), Juan Mendez (Argentina), Malcolm Evans (UK), Pablo Ceriani (Argentina) and Thomas Hammarberg (Sweden). Civil society will be represented through three members of the NGO Panel on Children Deprived of Liberty: Jo Becker (Human Rights Watch, co-convenor of the NGO panel), Benoit Van Keirsbilck (Defence for Children International, co-convenor of the NGO panel) and Ben Lewis (International Detention Coalition). Read the UN press release.

As Rapporteur on Torture, Professor Mendez with the support of AUWCL's Center for Human Rights and Humanitarian Law’s Anti-Torture Initiative (ATI) issued a groundbreaking report on children deprived of liberty, which will be instrumental in the study commissioned by the UN General Assembly. For more information on the report and Mendez's work with the ATI, visit: antitorture.org/children-deprived-of-liberty
