1L Tre' Leonard

Incoming 1L Tre’ Leonard is the embodiment of American University Washington College of Law’s motto, “Champion What Matters.”

A finalist in Barbri’s One Lawyer Can Change the World Scholarship competition, Leonard wrote his essay submission on how negative experience with law enforcement during his youth have inspired him to attend law school, in order to effect change as a prosecutor.

“Prosecution must entail active participation at the forefront of crime prevention,” he wrote. “Working as a prosecutor would enable me to exercise discretion at the highest level of our criminal justice system and work to mend the broken bridge between law enforcement and underserved communities, creating an environment of mutual respect. It is important to me to utilize my unique background and platform to be the change I want to help create.”

Leonard is one of 10 finalists in the competition, which received over 2,000 essays from entering law students responding to the prompt: How do you intend to use your law degree to change our world, and how would $10,000 towards your 1L tuition change yours?

When asked what receiving the scholarship would mean to him, Leonard wrote “Being selected would be an honor. To me it would mean that others see potential in me and believe I am worth the investment.”
