American University Washington College of Law is pleased to welcome Eduardo Bertoni as Director of the Center for Human Rights & Humanitarian Law. Appointed by Dean Roger Fairfax, Bertoni brings 25 years of national and international experience in human rights and humanitarian law, including training, research, litigation, and advocacy.

Bertoni's diverse background includes leadership roles in academia, government, and the private sector. He previously served as the Special Rapporteur for Freedom of Expression at the Organization of American States and has held a variety of positions both internationally and nationally and with academia, government, and the private sector.

Before joining the Center, Bertoni led the South America Regional Office of the Inter-American Institute of Human Rights. Bertoni's past positions include the founder and first director of the Center for Studies on Freedom of Expression and Access to Information (CELE) at Palermo University School of Law in Argentina; executive director of the Due Process of Law Foundation (DPLF); the first director of the Access to Public Information Agency, Argentina's data protection and access to information authority; advisor to the Ministry of Justice and Human Rights; and the founding partner of a private law firm.  He also served as the Special Rapporteur for Freedom of Expression of the Inter-American Commission of Human Rights at the Organization of American States.

Bertoni is an Argentine lawyer who holds a Masters in International Policy and Practice (MIPP) degree from the Elliot School of International Affairs at George Washington University and a Doctorate in Law from Buenos Aires University School of Law. Bertoni has repeatedly participated in TV and radio shows and published dozens of opinion pieces on democracy and human rights in leading newspapers in Spain, Latin America, and the United States.

He joins AUWCL's Center for Human Rights & Humanitarian Law, a recognized leader in human rights and humanitarian law.  For 30 years, the Center has worked with students, faculty, and the international legal community to provide support for human rights initiatives in the U.S. and around the world through teaching, scholarship, and service.

“Human rights are at risk today, and the center is the place from where I hope to contribute to strengthening the protection of fundamental freedoms globally,” Bertoni said. "It will be a privilege to do so from a university with such a long-standing record in the human rights field and working with faculty members who have a strong commitment to these issues."
