American University Washington College of Law’s Program on Information Justice and Intellectual Property (PIJIP) co-hosted the 18th Annual Works-in-Progress Intellectual Property Colloquium (WIPIP 2021) Feb. 11-13 and 18-20, 2021.

WIPIP 2021, held virtually for the first time since its inception, was jointly organized by AUWCL, Texas A&M University School of Law, and the University of Utah S.J. Quinney College of Law, with PIJIP Professor and Faculty Director Christine Haight Farley serving as one of the colloquium’s academic organizers. The WIPIP is an initiative created to provide a forum for both junior and senior academics to present and discuss their intellectual property papers and works-in-progress with colleagues at other institutions and receive early feedback.

Due to the outpouring of applications to participate in the cost-free, virtual conference, the normally three-day colloquium became a two-weekend event. WIPIP 2021 hosted over 100 paper presentations from around the world, plus four topical plenary sessions – “Race, Gender, and IP;” “The Impact of ‘Impact’ in IP Scholarship: Citations, Downloads and Why We (Should/Don’t) Care;” “Why American WIP’ers Should Care About International Law;” and “Judicial Perspectives on Patent Jurisdiction.” The colloquium also hosted two virtual game nights and concluded with an awards ceremony for attendees.

“We innovated in several ways to make it more fun and engaging with great payoffs in attendance and engagement. For instance, I moderated a concurrent session on a Saturday evening that had over 45 academics in the ‘room,’” Farley said. “It was a great community building opportunity.”
