American University Washington College of Law’s annual “In My Back Yard” (IMBY) Public Service Day went virtual this year, with over 130 members of the AUWCL community volunteering at, and for, organizations and spaces around Washington, DC August 10-14.

Organized by the Office of Public Interest  and its Public Interest/Public Service (PIPS) Scholars, IMBY brings 1L students and the rest of the AUWCL community together to volunteer in local DC neighborhoods, setting the tone for the spirit of public service & community involvement that pervades at AUWCL.

This year, IMBY 2020 was a week-long virtual and remote event drawing in over 130 participants comprised of faculty, staff, upperclass students, and incoming 1Ls. Each participant had the freedom to choose whatever kind of service they wanted to do, with many participants volunteering by cleaning up a local park, collecting canned goods for a local shelter, or volunteering online with an organization in need.

The week capped off with small-group IMBY Discussion Hours, where participants shared their volunteering experience and got to know one another through conversation.
