American University is a top source of congressional staff, including AUWCL alumni working as lawyers on Capitol Hill, according to a recent report from LegBranch.org.

AUWCL ranked second on the list of law schools with the most congressional staff graduates, ahead of those who previously attended Harvard, Yale, George Mason or NYU.

“AUWCL’s amazing alumni network reflects our core strength in preparing lawyers to practice at the intersection of law and public policy,” said Professor Fernando Laguarda, faculty director of the Program on Law and Government, which recently celebrated its 25th anniversary. “Current and future Hill lawyers know we’ve got the courses, programs, events and advisors to help them succeed.”

The Program on Law and Government is a premier center for the study of government, legislation, and constitutional and administrative law, offering students a diverse array of opportunities to learn and gain experience in the nation’s capital. The Program offers classes including Legislative Negotiations, Oversight and Accountability, Regulation, and Constitutional Powers of the Presidency. Students can also get involved in The Administrative Law Review, the AU Legislation and Policy Brief, and the newly created Oversight Project – a student-run blog which assesses the work of the federal oversight and accountability community. The Program also offers 13 areas of specialization for LL.M. students in law and government, with over 500 LL.M. alumni.

AUWCL routinely welcomes key congressional and political players to campus. This past year, events have featured author and Washington Post Associate Editor Bob Woodward and Chair of the Council of Inspectors General on Integrity and Efficiency Michael Horowitz; former Rep. Jason Chaffetz, Rep. Ted Lieu; Professor Emeritus and Rep. Jamie Raskin; Rep. Jim Himes; and Rep. Gil Cisneros. The Program on Law and Government also facilitates networking opportunities for current students and alumni.
