AUWCL Alumna Appointed to Civil Rights Leadership Role at Homeland Security

American University Washington College of Law alumna Katherine Culliton-González ’93 was recently appointed by President Biden to serve as Officer for Civil Rights and Civil Liberties at The Department for Homeland Security. The Office for Civil Rights and Civil Liberties (CRCL) supports the mission of the Department to secure the Nation while preserving our values, including liberty, fairness, and equality under the law.

Culliton-González is a nationally-recognized expert on civil rights in the context of changing demographics. For over 25 years, she has developed highly impactful, community-based civil rights strategies, and she has written and spoken widely about civil and human rights.

She most recently served as Director of the Office of Civil Rights Evaluation of the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights, where she led a team in investigating and drafting 12 comprehensive reports issued to Congress and the American public. Culliton-González has also worked on constitutional protections for immigrants as well as led litigation and advocacy strategies in racial justice efforts.
