More than 180 incoming students, faculty, and staff participated in the In My Back Yard (IMBY) Public Service Day on Aug. 19, volunteering at organizations in local Washington, D.C. neighborhoods.

With the wide-ranging move in the region towards oral, adversarial trials, Latin America continues to undergo significant legal and judicial reforms throughout the region. Participants from Argentina, Colombia, Ecuador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Peru, and the United States have gathered in Washington, D.C. for a two-week intensive seminar that aims to position them to gain a greater understanding of lessons learned in Latin American systems as well as how the example of the U.S. judicial system can apply to their own work in their respective countries.

Smith ‘86, founder and president of Smith & Company a leading strategic and crisis communications firm and co-executive producer of ABC’s Scandal, as the 2014 Commencement Speaker. The law school's commencement will be held May 18, 2014, at 1 p.m. at American University's Bender Arena (4400 Massachusetts Ave., NW). Smith will be presented with an honorary doctor of laws.
