The 2024 Sylvania Woods Black Alumni Homecoming, themed "Strength in Unity: Empowering Black Communities in the Fight for Democracy," was a resounding success, bringing together Black alumni, current students, faculty, and staff in a day-long event of inspiration and connection.

Hosted by the Black Law Students Association (BLSA) and Office of Diversity, Inclusion, and Affinity Relations in collaboration with various offices within the American University Washington College of Law (AUWCL), the homecoming aimed to explore the power of unity in empowering Black communities and amplifying their voices in the ongoing struggle for democracy.

Welcoming remarks by BLSA President Jayla Mack and Dean Roger A. Fairfax, Jr. set the stage for a series of thought-provoking panels and conversations. The first panel, titled "Guardians of Justice: The Crucial Role of Black Lawyers in Upholding Democracy," featured revered alumni and faculty who explored the pivotal role of Black lawyers in advancing civil and voting rights, challenging systemic injustices, and shaping legal frameworks to safeguard democracy. The panel, moderated by Professor of Law Cynthia Jones, offered insights from diverse backgrounds in law, advocacy, academia, and public service.

Attendees then engaged in a dynamic conversation on "Empowerment through Entrepreneurship: Black-Owned Business Leading Transformation." This panel highlighted the transformative impact of entrepreneurship on Black communities, showcasing firsthand experiences of founders, investors, and advocates. Assistant Professor Chaz Brooks, director of AUWCL's Entrepreneurship Law Clinic, moderated the discussion, emphasizing how entrepreneurship catalyzes social and economic advancement, aligning with the overarching theme of unity and empowerment.

Attendees then engaged in a dynamic conversation on "Empowerment through Entrepreneurship: Black-Owned Business Leading Transformation." This panel highlighted the transformative impact of entrepreneurship on Black communities, showcasing firsthand experiences of founders, investors, and advocates. Moderator Chaz Brooks led the discussion, emphasizing how entrepreneurship catalyzes social and economic advancement, aligning with the overarching theme of unity and empowerment.

The highlight of the homecoming was the awards luncheon, where outstanding individuals were honored for their contributions. Khadijah Adamu '24 received the 2024 Rising Star Award, Claudia Lewis '95 was recognized with the 2024 Joseph H. Hairston Award, and Ed Tapscott '80, former NBA coach and general manager and current vice president of player development for the Washington Wizards, was presented with the prestigious 2024 North Star Award.

In an emotional moment, the Sylvania Woods Black Alumni Homecoming planning committee surprised Dean Fairfax with a framed copy of the Black National Anthem, "Lift Every Voice." Amid a gathering filled with admiration and gratitude, current 3L student Stephanie Washington led attendees in a harmonious rendition of its first verse. This heartfelt tribute celebrated Dean Fairfax's extraordinary contributions to AUWCL, underscoring his unwavering dedication to fostering inclusivity and empowerment within the community.

The day concluded with a fireside chat featuring Dean Fairfax and Tapscott, offering attendees a unique opportunity to engage with a distinguished figure in sports leadership. Tapscott shared insights from his illustrious career and inspired attendees with his perspectives on leadership, resilience, and excellence.

"This event was a great opportunity to reconnect with fellow alumni and recently admitted students,"  said Chaz Gates '13, co-owner and COO of Wondry Wine. "It's also a great way to give back the the university and see all the exciting things happening here at WCL. I encourage all alumni to start coming back every year to the Black Alumni Homecoming so we can continue to move our great university forward."

Overall, the 2024 Sylvania Woods Black Alumni Homecoming was a testament to the power of unity and empowerment within the Black community. As participants departed, they carried a renewed sense of purpose and commitment to driving positive change in their communities and beyond.
