EU-US Investment and Trade Relations: Areas of Cooperation and Competition in the Current Geo-Economic Power Struggle

12:00PM - 01:00PM Washington College of Law

The EU and the US have the world's largest bilateral trade and investment relationship. They are both close partners and competitors in the current geo-economic power struggle. Since the current US administration's inception, particularly after Russia's war against Ukraine, cooperation has advanced, particularly in the fields of supply chain security, export controls, and investment screening. But what's next? The discussion will be focused on what has been achieved so far, what obstacles remain for deeper cooperation, and what to aim for in the long run.

Speakers:

Dr. Steffen Hindelang: Professor of international investment and trade law, Uppsala University, Faculty of Law / Sweden

Thomas Feddo, Founder and Managing Member of The Rubicon Advisors, LLC, Washington, DC

WCL 40th Anniversary of International Legal Studies

All Day Washington College of Law

The International Legal Studies Program at AUWCL celebrates its 40th Anniversary. The Program was founded in 1982 as a bold statement of our commitment to the teaching and research of international law. The program launched the first LL.M. program for international students in the United States. Ever since, AUWCL has remained at the forefront of international law and it has trained more than 4,500 lawyers from more than 60 countries. They are today an incredible community of legal professionals working in prominent law firms, international organizations, diplomacy, and non-governmental organizations. These professionals have witnessed and led global developments such as the end of the cold war and break-up of the Soviet Union, the development towards globalization, the eradication of poverty, the technological revolution, the multilateralization of international trade relations, as well as the renewed backlash against global values through nationalism, populism, and militarism. While the world has changed over the last 40 years, the need for a strong international legal order remains as pressing and necessary as in 1982. AUWCL’s commitment to these fundamental legal values continues unabetted.

To celebrate the achievement of the International Legal Studies Program’s 40th Anniversary, we are bringing together at our new law school campus in Washington, D.C. some of the greatest legal minds of our times to discuss the past and the future of international law at a unique conference. We are also going to offer an additional social program that allows to spend some time together with colleagues and alumni. This event will take place between Thursday and Saturday, October 20 to 22, 2022.
