Human Rights Reading Group

12:00PM - 01:30PM Tenley Campus - Warren NT02 Seminar Room

Throughout the year, students participating in the Human Rights Reading Group will confront the dilemmas and issues that arise in connection with human rights, focusing in particular on how acknowledgement of such critiques can help human rights advocates better navigate the field with creativity and critical reflection. Participants will learn how to assess the philosophical and practical underpinnings of human rights and how to ethically, pragmatically, and responsibly choose to critique and defend policies.

""Hasta La Raíz" Documentary Screening and Conversation with Ana Maria Belique

12:30PM - 02:30PM Tenley Campus - Yuma Y402 Classroom

The Academy on Human Rights is happy to present a screening of "Hasta La Rais" and a conversation with cast member Ana Maria Belique.

Imagine the country where you were born and raised tell you one day that you do not belong anymore because of your parents’ origins. You’d be forced to deny who you are, to hide your roots, excluded from civil life, and condemned to live in poverty. ‘Down to the Root’ is the story of three women facing this reality in the Dominican Republic where a part of society rejects them while another embraces and fights alongside them on a journey toward the recognition of their rights, and a proud re-encounter with their identity.

Ana Maria Belique, a cast member in the documentary, is the coordinator of Reconocido (Red Común Nacional Organizada de Ciudadanos/as Domininicanos/as), a movement that campaigns for citizenship rights and equality for all Dominicans of Haitian descent, mobilizes and empowers marginalised communities, and accompanies people who need legal support to access their documents.
