XIV Symposium on International Trade: Rule-based World Trade System under Systemic Crisis

08:30AM - 05:00PM Tenley Campus - Yuma YT01 Grossman Hall

The rule-based world trade system is facing a systemic crisis. Even though it helped developed and developing economies grow in the last twenty years, has softened the blow of the 2008 financial crisis and provided adequate enforcement of WTO agreements through its dispute settlement mechanism, WTO member countries have been recently acting with complete disregard to its rules. The potential consequences include an escalation of trade wars that can bring severe economic consequences for all WTO member countries alike. This event will discuss the current situation from the perspective of governments, private sector and academia and seek to contribute with suggestions as to how the WTO can adapt to this new scenario and continue relevant into the future.
