"Getting High-ly Educated" A Discussion on the Obstacles of Obtaining and Enforcing IP Rights in the Marijuana Industry

The IP Brief will host its 5th Annual Symposium. This event will discuss the obstacles of obtaining and enforcing IP rights in the Marijuana Industry. There will be two panels, one discussing the trademark issue of marking illegal goods and services and the other discussing the patent issue of one company’s attempt to monopolize the method of growing particular strains.  A networking lunch will take place after the panels. 9:30 - 9:45 AM Welcome Remarks by AUWCL Professor Robert Dinerstein

9:45 - 11:15 AM Immigration & Disability Rights
Panelists will discuss challenges for immigrants with disabilities, the regulations that help and hinder them, and strategies for improving federal immigration policies. Discussants will focus their comments on a recent high-profile case brought by the ACLU in which a ten-year-old with cerebral palsy was detained while attempting to receive essential medical treatment in the U.S.

11:15 - 11:30 AM Coffee Break

11:30 AM - 1:00 PM Women& Disability Rights
Panelists will examine the important and emerging intersections of women’s rights and disability rights as part of the international human rights framework. Discussants will focus their comments on issues related to reproductive rights, legal capacity, and forced sterilization.

1:00 - 2:00 PM Luncheon

Luncheon keynote address with Judith Heumann, former Special Advisor for International Disability Rights at the U.S. Department of State, former Director for the Department on Disability Services for the District of Columbia, and co-founder of the Center for Independent Living and the World Institute on Disability.

2:00 - 3:30 PM Deinstitutionalization & Community Integration

Panelists will discuss the practical and legal challenges of deinstitutionalization and community integration in Latin America and Europe. Discussants will examine the issues that arise when institutions are closed, explore options for transforming prior systems, and present resources for the effective integration of people with disabilities into local communities.
