Zach Smith
Scholar-in-Residence
Captain Zach Smith is a scholar-in-residence with TLS, focusing on the use of artificial intelligence and other emerging technologies in the national security context. He is currently serving on active duty in the U.S. Army Judge Advocate General’s Corps. Through the Department of Defense SkillBridge program, he will work full-time with TLS as he transitions from active duty to the civilian workforce.
Prior to this role with TLS, Captain Smith served in various capacities within the Fort Gregg-Adams Office of the Staff Judge Advocate—most recently he was the Deputy Chief of Military Justice for the installation and before that he served as the Fort Gregg-Adams Special Assistant United States Attorney, prosecuting all civilian Federal crimes committed within the exclusive Federal jurisdiction on Fort Gregg-Adams.
During law school, he worked as a law clerk for the Information Technology Subcommittee of the U.S. House Oversight Committee and as a judicial intern for Judge L. Scott Coogler in the Northern District of Alabama. Before attending law school, he worked in cybersecurity and software development roles for Core Sound Imaging, a medical technology firm in Raleigh, North Carolina. Captain Smith earned his JD from University of Alabama School of Law, and a BA in music from the University of North Carolina Greensboro.
