Bar Exam: Hawaii offers a two-day non-UBE exam, which is comprised of:

  • Fifteen multiple-choice questions that make up the Hawaii Legal Ethics Exam
  • Two 90-minute Multistate Performance Test (MPT) questions, which are "closed universe" practical questions that feature instructions, factual data, cases, statutes and other reference material supplied by examiners.
  • Six 30-minute Multistate Essay Exam (MEE) questions, which cover the following subjects:
    • Agency & Partnerships
    • Conflict of Laws
    • Corporations & Limited Liability Companies
    • Family Law
    • Trusts and Estates
    • Uniform Commercial Code, Article 9 (Secured Transactions)
    • All MBE subjects as detailed below
  • Two hundred multiple-choice Multistate Bar Exam (MBE) questions, covering the following seven subjects:
    • Constitutional Law
    • Contracts
    • Criminal Law & Procedure
    • Evidence
    • Federal Civil Procedure
    • Real Property
    • Torts


Scoring: The MBE score is weighed as 50% of the total score. The individual remaining items (15 Ethics multiple-choice questions, 2 MPT tasks, and 6 MEE questions) are all equally weighted for a cumulative total of 50%. A score of 134 out of 200 points is required to pass.


Filing Deadlines: The application deadline for the February Bar Exam is the preceding November 1. The application deadline for the July Bar Exam is the preceding April 1. There is no late filing deadline.


Fees: The fee for first-time takers is $500. A required report on your character and fitness from the National Conference of Bar Examiners costs $355. If you intend to use a laptop to take the exam, the laptop fee is $134.


Multistate Professional Responsibility Exam: A scaled score of 85 on the Multistate Professional Responsibility Exam (MPRE) is required for admission to the bar.
