International Trade and Investment Law Society Honors Myron Brilliant '89

April 25, 2018

On April 23, the International Trade and Investment Law Society (ITILS), together with the Trade, Investment and Development Program, hosted its 12th Annual Distinguished Alumni Award Dinner honoring Myron Brilliant ’89, executive vice president and head of International Affairs at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.

The program started with a panel discussion, "How U.S. Trade Policy is Impacting Global Trade Trends," moderated by Professor Padideh Ala’i, director of International and Comparative Legal Studies and of the Trade, Investment and Development Program. The panel was comprised of our distinguished alumnus Brilliant, and highly respected international trade lawyers Wendy Cutler, vice president at the Asia Society Policy Institute; Matt Nicely, partner of Hughes Hubbard & Reed; Karen Antebi, economic counselor for the Trade and NAFTA Office at the Embassy of Mexico in Washington, D.C., and John Gilliland with Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld, LLP.

During the award dinner, Amy Hariani '06, vice president of U.S.-India Business Council at U.S. Chamber of Commerce, and Terence Steward, managing partner at Stewart and Steward, shared their experience of working throughout the years with Brilliant. Steward, an iconic figure in international trade law, was Brilliant’s first employer. Steward greatly enjoyed Brilliant’s impressive capability in navigating the complexity of trade negotiations during his time with Steward and Steward, as they were actively involved in NAFTA negotiations.

Brilliant leads the largest international affairs team of any U.S. business association, representing the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and businesses before the U.S. and foreign governments, and international business organizations. His responsibilities extend to management oversight of 14 bilateral business councils in countries as diverse as Brazil, Egypt, Japan, Korea, Colombia, Cuba, and the U.K. He is frequently quoted in the media on a broad range of issues relating to international business and trade policy, and is a regular guest on CNBC, CNN, and other news programs.

Professor Ala’i and Monifa Hall, ITILS president, presented the ITILS Award to Brilliant for his notable success in promoting global trade and investment. In his acceptance remarks, he emphasized that AUWCL students must preserve integrity in their profession, see both details and a big picture, and be creative and passionate about what they are doing.

Amy Hariani, one of the founding members of ITILS at AUWCL, announced the launch of ITILS Alumni Association. The association marks a significant development in the law school’s efforts to promote study and career growth in the area of trade.
