Jobs in Gender Justice Worldwide

Even in the midst of our global pandemic, the Women and the Law Program remains focused on helping students find employment in gender and LGBTQ+ justice around the world.  Despite the lockdown, we invited attorneys to a Zoom panel on March 25, 2020 to share strategies for obtaining jobs and internships in this uncertain environment.  Our panelists were alumnae, Ms. Gayatri Patel (CARE USA), Ms. Katrina Fotovat (US State Department) and community partner, Mr. Rafael del Castillo e Melo Silva (Organization of American States). Over 90 students attended for a lively discussion about best approaches to breaking into international law, balancing a career with public interest and student loan debt, and the best ways to identify mentors.   Students also had questions about finding jobs and internships during this season of COVID-19. Our panelists emphasized the importance of social networking online, especially as many opportunities are now available remotely.  They advised students who had internship offers rescinded or postponed to keep in touch with organizations, many of which are struggling to adjust to new work environments, but which may have opportunities it the future.

Students are entering a challenging job market, but the WCL community is committed to ensuring that our students can use their law degrees to make a difference in the lives of women and LGBTQ+ persons worldwide.  WCL alumni and community can do our part to connect students with job opportunities related to gender and international law. If your organization is seeking interns or attorneys, please send the relevant information to womenlaw@wcl.american.edu.
