The 2020 Summer Sessions on Intellectual Property will be held at American University Washington College of Law. Our campus (the "Tenley Campus") is located one block from the Tenleytown Metro Station at 4300 Nebraska Ave., NW, Washington, DC 20016.
Below you will find information regarding daily travel to and from WCL, use of technology during the Summer Session, and other materials we hope you will find useful.

Housing
Dormitory-style housing is available on AU’s main campus in the Cassell Suites on East Campus. Participants can choose between single and double rooms. Rates are as follows: Single room $80.00/night, Double room $65.00/night. **Note: These rates do not include a 14.8% hotel tax, credit card fee, and administrative fee.** Examples of the rooms can be found here: Single Room, Double Room. There is no cookware in the shared kitchen, except for a microwave and an oven. Additionally, refrigerators are only available to rent, and information on that process can be found on: MyFridgeRental.com.
Registration for on-campus housing begins closer to the start of the program.
Airports
There are three main airports in the DC area:
Ronald Reagan National Airport (DCA) - This airport has easy access to the metro.
- Dulles International Airport (IAD)
- Baltimore Washington International Airport (BWI)
If you are not taking public transportation to get to your destination, we suggest you look for a Super Shuttle desk at the airport. If you take a cab, prices will start at approximately $30 from Reagan National Airport, $80 from IAD, and $90 from BWI.

Metro System
The Metro system is very clean, efficient, and the employees are used to helping Washington visitors. Metro's website www.wmata.com is useful, listing bus schedules, bus & train route maps, hours of operation, etc.
Washington's Metro rail system opens at 5am on weekdays and 7 am on weekends, closing at midnight Sunday through Thursday and 3 am on Friday and Saturday nights. Public Metro buses run on regular schedules from several areas around DC and Maryland. Call its information service at (202) 637-7000 or visit the website of the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority.
The Washington College of Law campus is located one block from the Tenleytown/AU Metro Station (also called Tenley Circle) on the Red Line. From the Metro station, walk east on Wisconsin Avenue one block to Tenley Circle, turn right onto Tenley Circle, and right again at Nebraska Ave. The pedestrian entrance will be on the right. Enter through the Warren Building entrance.
From the Tenleytown/AU Metro stop you can also take the American University Shuttle for trips between Tenleytown, WCL, and main campus. Tenley Campus is the 1st shuttle stop. Enter through the Warren Building pedestrian entrance located directly in front of the AU shuttle stop. Follow the directional signs when exiting the Metro.
Taxicab
When using a taxi service to come to class, be sure to instruct the driver to take you to 4300 Nebraska Ave., NW. rather than just to American University, because the Washington College of Law is not located on the main AU campus. If you need a taxicab, please call:

- Uber and Lyft are also popular in DC. These services provide rides for a similar price to taxicabs and are accessible by downloading an application available on mobile smart phones.
Fitness
There are two fitness facilities for student use: The William I. Jacobs Fitness Center, located in Bender Sports Arena, and The Cassell Fitness Center, conveniently located on the first floor of Cassell Hall. The centers are state-of-the-art facilities offering new equipment and services to help students, faculty, staff, and community members reach their fitness goals. With a diverse range of equipment and services, including aerobics classes, an indoor swimming pool, strength and cardiovascular equipment, and personal training sessions, there is something for everyone. *Note: The use of the fitness facilities are only free for students staying in on-campus housing.
Cafeteria
A cafe at WCL will be open from 7:00am to 2:00pm in the Atrium.
Wireless Network
Please connect to the wireless network named wcl-guest. The username and password will be given to you upon arrival. You will be able to connect to the internet using your username and password. All course materials will be available in weekly online Dropbox folders.
Weather
Washington area weather during the summer months is hot and humid. Temperatures usually range from 29 to 38 Celsius degrees (85 to 100 Fahrenheit degrees) with high humidity. However, air conditioning inside buildings is cold. Make sure to dress in layers.
Dress
Dress for classes at the university is generally casual. Jeans, skirts, shorts, and athletic shoes are acceptable for both men and women. We also recommend that students bring one business type outfit for one or two events that take place during the program.
Medical Emergencies

If you become ill or have a medical emergency that occurs on campus, you should call Public Safety (202-885-3636), who can coordinate transportation to the emergency room. For emergencies that occur off campus, however, you should call 911 or contact emergency assistance in the local area.
Important American University Policies
Sexual Assault/Harassment:
- American University does not tolerate sexual misconduct of any kind, in any context.
- Intimidating or forcing a person into sexual activity violates American University’s stated values and policies and is punishable with severe sanctions. Sexual misconduct includes, but is not limited to, rape, sexual assault, and sexual harassment. Incidents will be reported to the University as well as local authorities. Various campus groups and offices are available for counseling and support
Failure to abide by these rules could result in dismissal from the Program and/or complications with the law.
Tobacco- and Smoke-Free Policy
- This policy prohibits the use of tobacco products and medical marijuana on property owned, leased, or otherwise controlled or operated by the University including campus owned, leased or rented vehicles. The policy applies to faculty, staff, students, vendors, guests, and contractors. Tobacco is defined as all tobacco-derived or containing products, including, but not limited to, cigarettes (clove, bidis, kreteks), electronic cigarettes, cigars, cigarillos, hookah-smoked products, and oral tobacco (spit and spitless, smokeless, chew, snuff).
Alcohol/Drug Policy:
- American University community members uphold university policies and abide by local, state, and federal laws pertaining to alcohol and other drugs. Individuals accept personal responsibility for the outcome of their decisions. Consumption or possession of alcohol/drugs is strictly prohibited in university residence halls. A participant who violates this rule will not only face immediate expulsion from the program but will also be charged for misconduct with the University and the local authorities.
