Student Spotlight: Ruchika Sharma
For 3L Ruchika Sharma, the decision to study law was never about a career path, it was about purpose. Driven by a deep commitment to community and a desire to address systemic social justice issues through the law, Sharma chose American University Washington College of Law for its promise to develop the next generation of public-spirited leaders. A supportive network of students, faculty, and staff committed to public interest work made the choice an easy one.
That sense of purpose recently earned her a fellowship with the Campaign Legal Center, a nonpartisan organization at the forefront of protecting voting rights and ensuring fair elections. For Sharma, the recognition carries deeply personal weight. A naturalized citizen who arrived at law school already shaped by years of civil rights advocacy, she has long understood voting rights not as one issue among many, but as the foundation upon which all others rest.
“The right to vote is preservative of all other rights,” she explains. “Ensuring and protecting access to the ballot box is critical to building the kind of political power necessary to defend and advance our civil rights.”
Advancing voting rights is the cornerstone of Sharma’s career aspirations. The Campaign Legal Center fellowship puts her squarely at the center of that fight.
“I looks forward to contributing to work that spans the full breadth of democratic participation,” she said. “From protecting ballot access to challenging unfair redistricting as states across the country redraw their electoral maps.”
Sharma describes the opportunity as a dream come true and says she is eager to learn alongside a team of passionate attorneys who share her vision of a government that is truly responsive to the people it serves.
For fellow law students navigating the demands of legal education, Sharma offers advice that reflects the same clarity of purpose that has guided her own journey: “When law school gets tough, try to remember your ‘why.’ Take advantage of every opportunity that comes your way and don’t forget that you deserve to be here.”
