Pam Deese's Enduring Connection to American University and WCL

Journey from AU Alumna to Dedicated Trustee

Driven by purpose and a deep connection to Washington, D.C., Pam Deese (SPA/BS '80, WCL/JD '83) turned ambition into impact, rising from a hardworking political science undergrad juggling a demanding 30-hour-a-week job at the U.S. Trade Representative to a respected partner in the Intellectual Property Group at ArentFox Schiff. Her AU journey began with determination and hustle and continued with a bold move to personally advocate for her spot at WCL.

Deese credits her time at AUWCL with shaping both her professional path and personal values. Her connection to AU extended far beyond graduation. Fueled by a strong desire to give back to the institution, in 2001, following years of volunteer leadership with the Alumni Association and Annual Fund, she joined the AU Board of Trustees (BOT).

“It didn’t take me very long to agree to serve,” she said. “I think it's the greatest honor of my life to have been able to serve on the Board of Trustees.”

Deese has chaired multiple board committees and special task forces, including BOT governance, student conduct procedures, and President Alger's transition.

She expresses deep gratitude for the opportunity to serve a community she truly loves, noting that her involvement with students, faculty to staff and fellow BOT colleagues has introduced her to many brilliant, caring, and inspiring individuals. For Deese, AU is truly a family affair, as two of her three children are also proud alumni.

For the past decade, Deese has also taught intellectual property licensing to AUWCL students, including her daughter, Kendall. She loves being in the classroom and the enthusiasm students have for the topic.

Reflecting on her own journey, Deese credits AU with opening doors to meaningful connections and transformative professional opportunities. Her advice to students: “Come in with an open mind. Take a lot of different classes — not just the ones that are on the bar. Take classes that are taught by great faculty and keep an open mind.”

For Deese, what sets AU apart is its mission-driven education, supportive community, and its enduring ability to shape students' lives long after graduation.
