AUWCL Celebrates December 2025 Commencement
American University Washington College of Law proudly celebrated its December 2025 graduates during American University’s 150th Commencement ceremony, marking a significant milestone for students completing their legal education.
A total of 56 Washington College of Law students earned degrees across the Juris Doctor, LL.M., and Master of Legal Studies programs, representing a globally diverse cohort prepared to advance justice, serve communities, and lead with integrity in an evolving legal landscape.
The ceremony was presided over by American University President Jonathan R. Alger, who congratulated graduates on their achievements and encouraged them to carry forward the university’s shared values of leadership, service, and impact—regardless of discipline or profession.
Interim Dean Heather Hughes joined in celebrating the law graduates, recognizing their perseverance and dedication during a transformative period in legal education. She noted that the Class of December 2025 leaves AUWCL equipped not only with rigorous legal training, but with a strong sense of purpose and responsibility.

The commencement address was delivered by Admiral James Stavridis, who was awarded the degree of Doctor of Humane Letters, Honoris Causa. Addressing graduates from across the university, the retired four-star U.S. Navy admiral emphasized that service takes many forms. While military leadership is one path, he urged graduates to find meaningful ways to serve through their chosen professions—by strengthening institutions, supporting communities, and leading with integrity and compassion.
As the newest AUWCL alumni begin the next chapter of their professional journeys, they join a global network of legal professionals committed to championing what matters. See more photos here.
