Immigration & Higher Education
- The Higher Ed Immigration Portal is a “digital platform that integrates data, policies, and resources about DACA and undocumented, refugee, other immigrant, and international students to support federal immigration reform, fuel change at the state and campus level, and build a diverse movement of partners and stakeholders advocating alongside these students.” The portal has a vast amount of useful information, such as how recent changes in federal policies impact students, who is eligible to complete a FAFSA application for federal financial aid, state-by-state tuition and financial aid policies, and information for prospective and current graduate students.
- Advocacy organization Fwd.US regularly produces reports and policy briefs that are responsive to recent policy changes and trends. Advocates may find the Dreamers by the Numbers report helpful, as it provides detailed information about Dreamers in higher education and the workforce, broken down by state and metro area.
- Informed Immigrant has a variety of resources for undocumented students in high school and higher education.
- The President’s Alliance on Higher Education regularly offers timely webinars and other learning opportunities.
Legal Resources
We recommend that noncitizens who plan on filing an application always consult with an immigration attorney.
- AU Dream provides free legal services to all college students in the DC metropolitan area (the DMV). If you would like to know about your options under immigration law, please email audream@wcl.american.edu to schedule a consultation.
- You can search for a local immigration attorney using the American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA) directory.
- There are also many pro bono or “low bono” options available. You can search locally using the Informed Immigrant and Immigration Law Help databases.
Students with DACA can review updates from the President’s Alliance to understand the current state of DACA litigation. Students with DACA who are considering traveling abroad can review our advance parole guide with Informed Immigrant.
Students with Temporary Protected Status (TPS) can review updates from the National TPS Alliance and check USCIS’ TPS site for updates (select “Countries Currently Designated for TPS” to find updates by country).
NEW! Career
Entrepreneurial students and graduates can explore resources that Immigrants Rising has created for noncitizens. Local students can explore resources created for entrepreneurs by AUWCL’s Transactional Law Clinic Collaborative. Specifically, DC and Maryland residents can learn about local laws for Limited Liability Corporations (LLCs).
Additionally, students and graduates who wish to understand how their college experience and/or degree(s) might form the basis for an employment visa can check out the Legal Pathways That Work hub. The hub explains the difference between temporary employment visas and employment-based green cards, as well as procedural pathways to each.
Stay tuned for AU Dream’s guides on employment pathways.
