Description

This offering introduces students to the techniques of reading and interpreting literary texts (poetry, drama and fiction), with an emphasis on texts in which themes related to the law are prominent. After four weeks of introductory exercises, the course will focus on American literature of the mid-nineteenth century, a period in which the domains of law and literature were in close intellectual contact. In particular, we will take up a series of shorter texts by Herman Melville (who was, among many other things, the son-in-law of Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court Chief Justice Lemuel Shaw). The last two weeks of the semester will be devoted to contemporary literature. Students will be expected to write two short (~10 page) papers, one dealing with an assigned text and the other with a work of their own choosing. Grades will be based on these papers and on class participation. Students also will be asked to suggest poems for discussion in the final class of the semester.
