2025–2026 Humphrey Fellows Year

The 2025 - 2026 Humphrey Fellowship Program at American University Washington College of Law commenced in August with the arrival of ten Fellows representing nine countries: Albania, Belarus, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Cameroon, China, Pakistan, Philippines and Zambia. The first week of arrival in Washington, D.C. focused on essential transitions: securing housing, setting up U.S. phone lines and bank accounts, and becoming oriented to daily life in their new environment. Humphrey staff, together with dedicated community hosts, provided invaluable support to ensure a smooth journey.

The formal orientation period introduced Fellows to the program’s structure, expectations, and the wide range of resources available to them. Sessions covered critical topics such as program requirements, cultural adjustment, U.S. professionalism and etiquette, AU’s Honor Code, counseling support services, and safety and security both on campus and in the wider D.C. community. Technology training provided the necessary tools for academic work, while discussions on volunteerism and community service emphasized the program’s strong commitment to civic engagement.

Professional development and leadership preparation were woven throughout the orientation. Fellows engaged in sessions that highlighted cross-cultural communication, networking, and strategies for successful adaptation to the U.S. context. They also participated in the “In My Backyard” community service initiative at the Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Washinton DC where they helped organize school supplies for donation to students from pre-school to high school. This emphasized the Humphrey Program’s mission of leadership grounded in service.

Cultural and community-building experiences added a vibrant dimension to the orientation. Fellows connected with their community hosts at a welcome reception, enjoyed an evening at Nationals Park to experience an American pastime, and concluded the week with a festive community barbecue and campus tour. These activities not only provided cultural immersion but also fostered a strong sense of camaraderie within the cohort and with the AUWCL community.

Looking Ahead

The 2025–2026 Humphrey Fellows have begun their year with enthusiasm, resilience, and a strong sense of purpose. Orientation provided a comprehensive foundation in academic preparation, professional development, community service, and cultural exchange. With a strong foundation laid, the Fellows are well positioned to excel in their fellowship year, contribute meaningfully to AUWCL, and advance their leadership in their respective fields.
