LL.M. Programs

American University Washington College of Law is where the world meets to study law. Our dynamic LL.M. programs are at the center of policy, business, and all things international. Students, faculty, and alumni tackle pertinent legal issues in D.C. and around the world.

LL.M. Program Basics

  • All LL.M. students must complete 24 credits.  Most students enrolled in the in-residence programs complete the degree in 2-3 semesters.   Students in the hybrid LL.M. complete the LL.M. program in 18 months.  Students can study part-time, but they must complete the degree within 5 years of their matriculation date.
  • Students who are on student visas must enroll in at least 8 credits per semester; however, they can take fewer credits in their final semester.
  • The in-residence LL.M. programs offer either a research track, which requires a paper, or a practical skills track, which requires an externship.
