Description

This course will provide an overview of the theory, negotiation and operation of various regional free trade agreements (FTAs). In particular, the course will explore the role and impacts of free trade agreements on industries and communities across the globe, and will assess the legal and political mechanisms involved in implementing FTAs. Topics discussed will include market access for goods and services, dispute settlement, investment, labor, the environment and other emerging issues addressed in free trade agreements. Prominent guest lectures from government and industry will provide practical insight into current issues under FTAs. The final grade for this course will be based on a combination of class participation and a written paper. There will be no exam in this course. Note that this course will be co-taught by Professor Melanie A. Frank and Alicia Cate, an international trade and arbitration attorney with Weil Gotshal & Manges in Washington, D.C.
