Description

This course will explore the fundamentals of zealous, client-centered criminal defense advocacy. The first part of the semester will focus on the role of the criminal defense attorney, selected legal issues in defense practice, and defense ethics. The second part will focus on the application of defense theory and client-centered advocacy in the pre-trial and trial context through simulated exercises, including the initial client interview, opening statements, direct examination, cross-examination, and closing arguments. Enrollment is limited and by permission of the instructor only.

APPLICATION PROCESS: Students interested in enrolling in Prof. Davis' "Criminal Defense: Theory and Practice" class should submit a brief essay(no more than 2 pages double-spaced) describing their interest in and commitment to criminal defense work. The essay should also indicate whether the student is a 2L or 3L and whether the student has taken Evidence or will be taking Evidence in the Fall.
