Description

Gender, Cultural Difference and International Human Rights is a two-credit, elective seminar. There are no prerequisites. The primary purpose of this course is to explore issues in international human rights and humanitarian law raised by cultural and religious practices that affect women. We will examine the underlying assumptions, principles and approaches of the major UN human rights instruments, with a particular emphasis on the roles of gender and culture in specific contexts, such as domestic violence, trafficking in women, and female genital surgery/FGM. We will also explore national, regional and international responses to women’s human rights violations, paying particular attention to how cultural and traditional practices affect such responses.

Most of the reading materials are contained in packets that can be purchased at the Document Center on the WCL fourth floor. The others can be found in either of the following books:

Twenty-five Human Rights Documents (2001) (“25HRD”) (purchase from bookstore on main campus)

Women and Human Rights: The Basic Documents (1996) (“WHRD”) (purchase from bookstore on main campus)
