Tenth Annual IP/Gender: Gender and the Regulation of Traditional Knowledge

Date: 03/20/14
Times: 04:00PM - 06:00PM
Description: In many places, women are deemed to be the most important practitioners of certain old arts and the primary custodians of old ways of knowing, with many cultural "traditions "being passed primarily or exclusively from one generation of women to the next. Therefore, the consequences of introducing IP regimes in this area may have special significance for women and their communities, or may reflect underlying assumptions about gender, women's role in processes of decolonization and development, and the distributive consequences of IP regimes. In coordination with the 2nd Annual CherryBlossom Symposium: Federal Policy and Traditional Knowledge, this event will focus on the role of women and the effect of gender roles on national and international regulation in the area of traditional knowledge, as that term is broadly understood.
