Religion and Reproductive Rights: Friend or Foe?

Date: 03/03/14
Times: 03:00PM - 06:00PM
Religion is often seen as a barrier to comprehensive reproductive rights, but it does not have to be. Spiritual individuals and religious groups are often assumed to be anti-choice and can, as a result, be overlooked as members of the reproductive justice movement. In reality, the majority of people of faith from most religious traditions support reproductive rights and healthcare options for men and women. People of faith have abortions, provide abortions, and support meaningful abortion access, and, as such, they are important parts of any reproductive justice conversation.

This event will focus on the reproductive and religious interests at stake in the upcoming U.S. Supreme Court case challenging the Affordable Care Act's contraceptive coverage benefit – Hobby Lobby v. Sebelius. The event will additionally examine the intersection of faith and reproductive decision making and will reflect the reality that people sometimes practice their faiths in ways that are different from those that dominate the discourse.
