Unpaid Labor and Student Development

The symposium will be structured around the current lawsuits that have occurred against Hearst and Fox Searchlight by previous interns and externs. The panels will represent a balance of professors, practitioners and government officials who will discuss FLSA, the factsheet and the current standards. Issues discussed will include the general active cases and economics of such practices, an examination of the education exemption to unpaid labor, the social implications of access to employment through unpaid internships, and a more detailed examination of the short and long term economic impacts of unpaid work.
