The WCL Externship Fair

Wednesday, January 19, 2011
04:00 PM - 06:15 PM
American University Washington College of Law, 6th Floor
4801 Massachusetts Avenue, NW, Washington, DC

The annual Externship Fair provides an opportunity for students to meet with a wide variety of representatives from not-for-profit organizations, government agencies, courts and law firms engaged in pro bono work seeking externs for the summer, spring and fall semesters. Past participants include numerous divisions of the U.S. Department of Justice and other government agencies, such as the FCC, the SEC and the Departments of Commerce, Education, and State. Also in attendance are prosecutors from a variety of jurisdictions and the public defender services for D.C., Virginia, and Maryland, as well as dozens of public interest organizations such as the ACLU and the Legal Aid Society. During the Fair, students gather information, network and participate in informal interviews with employers. Last year, over 160 attorneys representing more than 130 employers and over 400 students participated in the Externship Fair, and many organizations were able to complete their summer recruitment in this relaxed environment. Through their externships (unpaid), students receive academic credit for substantive legal work under the supervision of an attorney. All students who participate in the Externship Program must enroll in an externship seminar and are closely supervised by law school faculty. The Externship Program will host a reception immediately following the Fair to thank employers for participating.
