IMPORTANT: This is a three credit graded class. Due to the condensed summer schedule the seminar meets for 2 hours and 50 minutes each week PLUS students meet with faculty in small groups for an extra half hour every week. The time/place of this extra meeting is determined by the professor. REGISTRATION: There are two parts to registering for an externship: 1) Register on-line for the seminar as you would for any class. 2) Register for the field placement by going to the Externship Page www.wcl.american.edu/externship and submit a Request for Approval, which generates the necessary forms.
Description
PLEASE NOTE PRIOR TO REGISTERING FOR THIS SECTION: The required small group sessions will be held at the law school immediately prior to classes beginning at 6:00 p.m. Do not register for this section if you are unable to attend small group sessions at 6:00 p.m. on the nights classes are held. The theme of this seminar will be "FINDING YOUR PATH IN THE LAW." We will explore the meaning of being a lawyer and a member of the legal profession. While we discuss the wide range of opportunities and experiences available to persons with law degrees, the overriding goal of this course will be to provide you with an opportunity to think critically about, and reflect upon, what being a lawyer means to YOU, and to understand the breadth of possibilities in this regard given your individual career goals and values. We will seek to accomplish this goal by reading about and discussing the lives of lawyers in a variety of settings, as well as hearing from seasoned guest speakers who will come to class to share their legal experiences. We will also spend a great deal of time discussing and analyzing the issues raised in your field placements. Learning from each other’s experiences will hopefully help each of you develop a better understanding about the type of lawyer you want to become, how to get there, and the quest for finding satisfaction, fulfillment, and a healthy balance in your future legal career. This is a three-credit graded course. It is taken concurrently with a field placement in a non-profit or governmental organization, or a private law firm handling pro bono matters exclusively.

Please be prepared to describe briefly your externship placement including the number of hours you intend to work, the tasks likely to be undertaken, the nature of supervision, and any insights, issues, or challenges you anticipate. In addition, please read pp. 1-17 and, anticipating the second week of class, skim through to page 62 of the course materials.
